Case Studies

SEL can offer a complete design, supply and installation service or provision of a solo membrane welder to assist in the installation of bulk rainwater storage tanks.

SEL recently completed the largest geocellular stormwater management solution in the UK at the new Jennett’s Park housing development in Berkshire using Wavin Aquacell. You can find more information on the project on Osma’s homepage (link, opens in new window), Please take a moment to read the case study as we're sure it will be of interest. This project required detailed programming on the manufacturing of the core materials and logistics for ensuring everything arrives on site in time to prevent delays. SEL have the experience and resources to ensure this is done efficiently on your behalf.
In support of our works we can provide method statements, risk assessments, technical support and Cad details. Our operatives are CSCS certified and all site installation teams will have a certified telehandler driver.
In accordance with current guidance SEL recommends a minimum 1mm thick welded impermeable (Selflex) be used as the encapsulation of an attenuation tank to minimise the possibility of leakage from puncture and joint failure in the future. This will ensire your attenuation tank will have fully heat sealed seams which have been fully tested as part of SEL's CQA installation protocol.

Another reason SEL use Selflex 1mm PP is it has optimum chemical and physical stability. It is engineered to offer greater flexibility over a wider temperature range than HDPE membranes and has a superior tear and tensile strength than LDPE with exceptional weld seam tear resistance. Selflex also has a high resistance to puncture. Most importantly it is a weldable membrane and when installed by SEL all seams will be sealed using hot air welding equipment and tested for integrity.

Membranes which utilise taped or adhesive joints are unable to ‘elongate even slightly’ and have the potential to debond and fail when elongated as taped joints rely on an adhesive bond. These cannot be guaranteed in the long term under hydrostatic pressure where the damp and dusty conditions exist such as on construction sites.

We also like to point out that the Water Resources Act 1991 (c. 57) states it is an offence to pollute surface and/or ground water. Therefore in order to protect surface and ground water, the correct specification of the underlying geomembrane is essential. Failure of a geomembrane due to inadequate jointing or because of puncture caused during the construction phase may ultimately allow pollutants such as hydrocarbons to escape or in the case of attenuation allow ground water to enter.

Finally to demonstrate our technical capabilities we recently completed some attenuation tanks on a scheme called Chaucer School in Sheffield.

SEL were approached on the basis of our expertise to resolve some issues where the current attenuation tank layout could not be installed due to limited space.

SEL advised on alternative layouts and completed the installation within programme without any fuss, stress or the dayworks book.

We are sure the photo to the left will demonstrate the quality of our workmanship.
